DRINKING WATER SAMPLING FOR LEAD
The City of Orillia Public Works Department is requesting volunteers to be a part of the 2010 Lead Sampling Program. This program is in compliance with new Provincial requirements and will provide a more detailed review of lead levels at the tap. Our ongoing sampling and a pilot program in 2007 have not identified problems with lead in our water.
Older homes built prior to the mid-1950’s are more likely to have lead pipes and service lines. Homes built between the mid-1950’s and mid-1980’s are likely to have lead solder or lead in some fixtures.
Anyone with a home built prior to 1980 who would like to volunteer their home as a sampling location, please call the Public Works Department at 329-7249 for details.

City of Orillia Affordable Housing Action Plan – Community Consultation
Dear Community Member:
The City of Orillia Housing Committee has retained the services of SHS Consulting to develop a comprehensive “action plan” that will ultimately lead to an increase in affordable cost-effective housing opportunities.
While some initial work may be required to verify the specific needs of this community, as distinct from the County as a whole, this plan is not intended to be another needs study. Rather, it is designed to be an action plan containing solutions to the identified needs. Some of the issues to be studied are:
-
Analysis of the barriers/challenges facing the providers of affordable housing in Orillia
-
Analysis of specific sub-markets such as seniors and students
-
Review of the merits of the City acting as a direct provider of housing or an indirect facilitator of solutions to meet the community’s housing needs
-
Review of additional municipal financial incentives, including extension of the tax abatement program to entry-level home ownership providers; establishment of a reserve fund to cover development charges on eligible projects; waiver of building permit fees, planning application fees, and/or cash-in-lieu for eligible projects; and a policy on capital contributions
-
Establishment of a housing-first policy for the disposal of surplus municipal lands
-
Creation of either a Housing Coordinator staff position or the establishment of a community housing corporation to implement the resultant action plan.
If you are interested in this initiative please contact Debrah Rabbitts, Executive Assistant to the Mayor and Council at 326-1177 or

and your name/organization will be forwarded to the consultants for inclusion in the survey.

Notice of Garbage Tag Reduction In 2010
Effective July 1, 2010, residents and businesses of Orillia will be issued 30 garbage tags for the period July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. The reduction from 40 tags corresponds to recent improvements to the City’s diversion programs including the new Green Bin program and the Fibre Box program whereby residents can use one Recycling Box for containers and another Recycling Box for mixed paper. Fully utilizing the City’s new Green Bin program and the Recycling Box program can cut your waste by 45%! So save your tags.
You can still use your orange garbage tags as there is no expiry date on them. Additional garbage tags can be purchased in lots of 5 tags for $8.25. Questions? Call 325-3522 or visit the City’s website at www.city.orillia.on.ca and look under the Residents/Solid Waste Info. Tabs.>>
