About
the Project - Background
Citizens,
user groups and community leaders have all realized the
need for recreation facilities in the City for a number
of years. The lack of facilities to meet community needs
was confirmed in a report produced by the City’s Recreation
Advisory Committee in 2001, which concluded that a multi-use
recreation and leisure facility was needed in order to meet
growing demands.
In
2002 City Council contracted dmA Planning and Management
Services to conduct a feasibility study in order to determine
the kind of project that would best meet the community’s
needs.
Their released
in May 2002, recommended multi-purpose recreation facilities
containing a twin pad arena, gymnasium, 25-metre pool, as
well as outdoor ball diamonds, soccer fields and tennis
courts.
Once
City Council approved the proposed development, a MURF Steering
Committee, including City staff, Councillors and community
leaders was created. A series of micro-meetings were held
to design the facilities, which often involved representatives
from user groups and the community. Following this process,
City Council considered and approved the final MURF plan.
The
MURF project will allow the City to expand the number and
kinds of activities offered to residents, while community
groups will be able to do a better job of meeting the demand
for recreation and sport activities. Take a look at the
