About
the Project - Background: Feasibility Study
The
current MURF project has its roots in a report produced
by the City’s Recreation Advisory Committee in 2001
entitled “Culture and Recreation Needs,” a summary
of extensive consultations with interested community groups
and individuals on recreation issues. One of the conclusions
was that a multi-use recreation and leisure facility would
be a great benefit to the community to address the shortcomings
of existing facilities and accommodate growing demand.
To
build upon this report, City Council contracted dmA
Planning and Management Services to undertake analysis and
research to identify future recreation facility requirements
and determine whether a multi-use facility would be a viable
method of meeting those needs. In addition to analyzing
demographics and leisure trends, the consultants coordinated
a user group survey completed by 25 community organizations
and arranged telephone interviews with 326 randomly selected
households.
The
MURF Feasibility Study Final Report, released in May 2002,
recommended multi-purpose recreation facilities containing
a twin pad arena, gymnasium, 25-metre pool, as well as outdoor
ball diamonds, soccer fields and tennis courts. These recommendations
were then presented to representatives of user groups and
to the community at large through public events. City Council
considered the information gathered, along with the report
recommendations, to make decisions on the final MURF design.
