Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most recognized and accepted North American standard for rating the environmental friendliness of the design, construction, operation and sustainability of buildings. The West Orillia Sports Complex will be one of the most environmentally friendly facilities in Orillia. As the City is targeting a LEED Silver Certification. It has been designed to include many energy saving and environmentally friendly features. This includes;
- A heat recovery system that will reuse the heat from the ice refrigeration system to provide heat in the stands and dressing rooms
- The latest most energy efficient lighting technology
- Rain water collection system that would reuse water
- Utilizing the Storm Water Pond for irrigation of the athletic fields
- Use of windows for natural light to save on energy costs
The environmental components of this facility are estimated to provide the City of Orillia a significant savings in operating costs.
