Introduction

The Department of Culture and Heritage is responsible for the management of the Orillia Opera House and the Stephen Leacock Museum. The Department is currently in an interim phase regarding cultural planning. The following are the priorities for the department during the interim phase:
- Develop a cultural strategy for approval of Council
- Based on the major goals and strategies, develop a cultural policy for the City of Orillia
- The Department maintains a membership in the Creative City Network, an organization comprised solely of municipal cultural workers from across the country who share policies, plans and other associated research projects.

Leacock Museum

The Leacock Museum promotes the legacy of Stephen Butler Leacock in the context of literary learning and ensures the maintenance and interpretation of his summer home as a National Historic Site.

Revenue Centres for the museum include retail (gift shop/bookstore), educational programming, museum admissions, café and catering, commercial and non-profit rentals, special events and exhibitions and TicketMaster. Facilities include Leacock House, Swanmore Hall, the Boathouse (Children’s Discovery Place) and the waterfront property.

The former board of the Museum approved a 10-year plan for operating and restoration in 2001, which is being implemented on an incremental basis as resources allow. This plan is currently under review.

Opera House

The Orillia Opera House is was built in 1873 and continues to serve the community to this day as a great venue for live theatre, musical performances and other community events. The building houses two separate performance areas. The Lightfoot Auditorium (700 seats) and the smaller studio theatre (104 seats).
