In Orillia's Plan for Culture, investment and resource development were defined as priorities and efforts to uncover potential cultural sponsorship opportunities were recommended.
Two students from the Georgian College Research Analyst Post-Graduate program recognized a disconnect between business and culture and conducted a survey of local businesses to gauge their level of interest in, and support of, local cultural activity. Aaron Howes and Ashley McElhone approached the Department of Culture & Heritage to strike a partnership to explore the subject. The study was undertaken with a view to addressing a priority identified by residents in the Council-adopted Plan for Culture – to create better coordination for cultural organizations such as festivals and events and to streamline funding programs. It has been recognized that the local business community plays a vital role in supporting cultural events and preserving cultural heritage.
Due to the increased need for private funding of these events, the project, “Uncovering Cultural Sponsorship Opportunities in Orillia” was completed (under the direction of Robert Wong). The data was gathered through an online survey, including questions of how businesses support local culture, why or why not, do they attend cultural events, do they attend with family, have they donated to culture previously, and how much, etc. The survey was launched at a luncheon attended by 12 invited local prominent business people. The survey was then made available on line and through the Chamber of Commerce (to its membership).
