Retail Business Holidays Act

Under the Retail Business Holidays Act the City of Orillia has a by-law that allows smaller businesses to be open on all statutory holidays except Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Larger stores that have 2,400 square feet of retail space or more and employing four or more employees are not covered under the general by-law and must make separate application to the City. A number of larger businesses have done this. The process takes a minimum of sixty days and includes submitting an application to Council, with a $75.00 fee, a Public Meeting with thirty-days public notice, the consideration of a by-law and, if passed, a thirty-day appeal period.

If you are the owner or operator of a larger store and require further information, please contact Janet Nyhof, Deputy City Clerk 325-2108.
