-Anti-Littering in Orillia-

$300 Littering Fine

We all pay the price when litter accumulates in our City, especially LitterBug culprits. The fine for littering is $300. City of Orillia by-law Chapter 839.1.1 states, “ No person shall throw, place or deposit refuse or debris on private or public property within the limits of the City of Orillia, except where otherwise specifically permitted.” Contact the City By-law Office at 325-2313 if you observe an area of litter concern or to be a witness against a LitterBug.

Getting the Community Involved

The ongoing Adopt-A-Street program and the yearly Pitch-In Week program allow individuals, groups and businesses that register with the Waste Management Advisory Committee (WMAC) to help curb the litter problem. Registrants will be provided special Envirotags (or Pitch-In bags), cleanup guidelines and recognition. The City welcomes the work of local volunteers whose dedication helps curb the litterbug habit. For more information, contact WMAC at 329-2452.

Litter Control Tips

· Always put your trash in a proper container. If one is not available, hold on to your garbage until you find one.
· Use returnable, reusable or refillable drink containers or bring your own cup.
· Use a litterbag in your vehicle.
· Reduce and reuse as much as you can before you recycle.
· Place your garbage in an appropriate container or bag and all of your recyclables correctly separated to ensure proper pick-up.
· Put your garbage out for collection as close to pickup time as possible and secure all items in your recycling boxes.
· Secure your load properly, loose debris can cause accidents and is against the law.
· A well-maintained yard, free of debris and weeds beautifies the community, increases the property value and deters potential litterbugs.
· Get involved! Support community cleanups, Adopt-A-Street, recycling and composting programs.
· Support Anti-littering legislation and other efforts to reduce litter. The fine for littering is $300.00. Contact the City By-law Office at 325-2313 if you witness a littering infraction.
