Orillia Wins RCO Award

Gold Municipal Waste Minimization
Award 2007
The Recycling Council of Ontario has awarded the City of Orillia with a Gold Municipal Waste Minimization Award for 2007. The awards recognize municipalities that minimized waste disposal through 3Rs initiatives (reduce, reuse, recycle) in 2007. Judging was undertaken by 21 industry experts and was more intensive than in previous years. The City’s calculated residential diversion rate in 2007 was 53%. Judges also look at the City’s waste minimization programs offered when assessing award candidates.
Mayor Stevens noted that as the award criteria was recently overhauled to reflect higher standards; the City's residents are to be congratulated for their continued dedication to reducing, reusing and recycling.
Peter Dance, the Director of Public Works for the City stated: “The public, Council and staff should take pride in our waste diversion effort to-date. To stay at the forefront of waste minimization our challenge is to maximize use of our green bin program.”
The citizens of Orillia can take pride in their achievement. Initiatives like the new green bin program will work to ensure Orillia stays a leader in waste minimization and diversion in Ontario.
Silver Municipal Waste Minimization
Award 2006
The Recycling Council of Ontario has
awarded Orillia with a Silver Municipal Waste Minimization
Award for 2006! This award is given to municipalities with high waste diversion rates. Judging followed the hierarchy of the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Way to go Orillians !!! Keep up the good work!
Greenest Town in Ontario
In 2003 Orillia tied for first place
with Caledonia in TV Ontario's Studio 2, TV Ontario's province-wide
contest to find the 'greenest' town. Orillia was selected for being
a leader in waste reduction and water conservation efforts. The Environmental
Advisory Committee , the Waste Management Advisory Council and the citizens
of Orillia must also be thanked for their contributions in achieving
this award.
